I think the biggest problem you have right now is just to get the H-1B visa
approved by January 7. Of course it depends from the INS Center where you
have applied, in your case it is California. You should check there how long
it takes to process H-1B visas. Ask your lawyer or you can check on several
web-pages.

I just got my 3-years renewal of my H-1B approved in Vermont and it took
from July 10 until September 27. So I can imagine that for a new H-1B visa
in Vermont you would most probably not have it approved by January 7.

When I got my H-1b visa the first time in 1998, I was in Switzerland and the
American lawyer just sent me the INS approval for my H-1B visa, which I took
to the Embassy in the morning, and I picked up the visa in the afternoon. My
INS approval was dated September 9, 1998, the letter from the lawyer was
dated September 17 and I went to the Embassy on October 27.
So I am not sure how this information from the INS to the Swiss Embassy was
handled, but I do not think it takes much time, also because you always
experience a delay in notification and it probably gets processed during
that delay.

Anyway now, after Sept. 11, I would call the Embassy in Bern and ask, if all
procedures are still the same. I know that when I will go to get the
passport stamped for my renewal of the H-1 Visa I have to take with me a lot
of additional information: letter from my company,....

Good luck!

Corinna

P.S. Nowadays you can file for a "speedy H1-B visa approval" in two weeks,
if you pay additional 1000.00$.

Subject: swiss-list: Question about H-1B (in Switzerland)

Can anybody help my with some questions about H-1B visa?

I am currently at UC Berkeley with a J-1 visa.

I have been hired as a Faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and I will
start my appointment on January 7th 2002. The INS received my H-1B
application on October 10. I would like to visit Switzerland during
Christmas holidays. For that, I understand that I need to get the INS
approval before leaving the US. I also understand that the international
house of the University of Pittsburgh needs to file a I-824 form to inform
the embassy in Switzerland. Is it right?

Does anybody know how much time it takes to the INS to notify the US
embassy in Bern?

How long does it take for the US embassy in Switzerland to process the visa
in order to get the sticker in the passport? Is it a similar process to
the J-1 visa (Is it possible to leave the application in the morning and
to pick up the passport in the afternoon) ?

Thank you very much

Stephane
