Hi,
I have moved to the USA 2 years ago and have requested from the AVS
information relative to my obligation to pay AVS in Switzerland and how
it works when you pay SS in the USA. Here is the answer I got:
You can pay AVS in Switzerland, this is not an obligation.
You have to pay SS 10 years in the USA if you want to be able to
receive SS at retirement, even if you are not living in the USA at
retirement age. This SS is paid by the US SS.
At retirement, a swiss citizen will touch the AVS pro-rata the number
of years of payments. (if you missed 10 years in payment, you will lose
25% of the retirement monthly amount.
If you don't start paying AVS while in the USA, after 1 year of living
in the US, you can't pay AVS. Only when you will go back to
Switzerland.
