Hi Nico,

I second what others have said: it does need time, and the most important
thing is to link and be linked, to be a connected part of the web (many
webmasters therefore create link-farms, networks of pages that heavily
crosslink each others). It definitely matters who links to you (and how
they're rated) and whom you link to. So, first of all, try to get into
directories that specialize on your content, get linked by and link to
friends, business partners etc. with the same interests, i.e. place the
contents that you provide into the context of the web - that's what it is
all about after all and that's why it's such a great place. (btw: you can
see who links to your site by using the "link:URL" syntax, i.e.
http://www.google.com/search?q=link%3Ahome.comcast.net%2F%7Enicoghilardi -
currently no one.)

It should be added that META-tags are not the only data the engines base
their ratings on and are generally overrated nowadays - in fact, it's safe
to say that they're pretty much obsolete for most of the engines since they
simply ignore them (as far as I know only Inktomi is supposed to still use
them). The reason is that many webmasters started abusing the concept with
so-called META-spam. But it won't hurt to have them either, as long as you
don't overdo it.

Other sources the engines take their information from: <title> tag (very
important), <img> and <h> tags, and of course the content of the page
itself. How they mine and weigh this data - their relevancy algorithm -,
however, is their best kept secret. And it's generally very hard to cheat
and get a front-of-the-line pass, unless you want to spend money.

As for hosting, I currently use http://www.cyon.ch and am very very happy
with their offer and service. Hosting is CHF 4.50 per month (excl. the
domain) with 250MB, unlimited e-mail addresses, unlimited subdomains (like
aaa.yourdomain.com, bbb.yourdomain.com) PHP, MySQL, FrontPage (if you
really have to... ;) and a great admin-interface. If you need lots of
space, there is net4all.ch in Lausanne who offer 1GB for CHF 16.- (I can
"so-so" recommend them).

Btw, this is my first post to the swisslist, so let me shortly introduce
myself: My name is Michael Felber, I'm a media and communications person. I
recently arrived from my hometown Basel and am currently trying to set foot
in the SF bay area - any hints always appreciated. I look forward to
meeting some of you from the area at one of the future get-togethers.
