swiss-list: Taxes for green card holders residing temporarily outside the US

We are moving back to Switzerland for some time but think about coming
back to the US after a few years. Therefore we would prefer not to loose
our green cards and are trying to find out what exactly the implications
will be, in particular when working for an international organization
whose salaries are tax free in Switzerland. Our current understanding is
that

- Living outside the US for up to two years without loosing the green
card is possible by asking for a reentry permit before you leave.
- Green card holders are taxed on their worldwide income.
- For green card holders, the US taxes income from international
organizations even when such income is tax-free in Europe.
- For income received outside the US, a deduction of $76000 can be made

Does anybody have experience with this situation? Does anybody know a
good tax-expert in the Bay area who knows the details of international
tax laws in particular as far as green card holders are concerned? Has
anybody experience with re-applying for a green card after giving it up?

Dorothea
