When we bought our first car, we had no idea about cars (both of us did
never own a car). We bought it from the classifieds, and we would bring
it to a shop, who would check it for us for about $50 or so. That helped
with the mechanical side. (we did that before we agreed to buy) What we
did not know then, is that in US you always have to bargain if you want
to buy a car, never pay what is asked for, especially for used cars.
Good luck
  Anne
