In The US there is no concept of being "checked in" as there is in CH, so
they do not know that being registered at your community in Switzerland
exists and so will not ask you for that. As you said Miachel, having an
address where mail can be sent is sufficient for most cases.

There are conditions under which you can be considered "a resident" for
tuition purposes etc. but these are specific to an institution and/ or
state. In California Berkeley or SJSU will consider you NOT a resident
when you have a J1 but you can be a resident when you have a H1B. You'll
be paying taxes in the US with both Visa's and will have a US address
which are the two other requirements.

Also check out http://www.aiesec.org/web/home/students/exchange/ which you
can contact to get a J1 yourself (or for your wife) once you have a
possible job opportunity (at a cost ... it used to be around 1000-1500$ a
few years ago). So the strategy would be to look for a job and not worry
about the visa question, if you then land it you can get the visa through
aiesec yourself. This will allow you to take care of the Visa paperwork
and risk of getting the visa which is what worries US Managers and their
HR not used to this process most (not the money it costs). There is some
fineprint like you must be a student or have received your last diploma
within the last 3 years, must be a qualified work in your area of studies
etc.

Another link with info is the Immigration Support Network
http://www.isn.org/index.html (not INS but ISN :)

Cheers
