The pro of a J-1 visa is that your spouse (who will get a J-2 visa) can
apply for work authorization and therefore get a job. But to do so you
will have to proof that you earn enough money to support your family. She
could only apply if your salary is sufficiently big and her salary is NOT
needed for 'survival'. It is obvious that this does not make any sense,
especially for Postdoc salaries, but that's the way the government and INS
thinks it should be. The con of the J-1 is the limited time frame it can
be extended (max. 3 years).
The pro of the H1 visa is that it can be extended to max. of 6 years. The
con is that your spouse, who will get an H-4 visa, has no way to work
UNLESS she is able to obtain a visa of her own (J-1 or H-1, or depending
on her profession some other specialty visa, e.g. for journalists,
artists, financial people, etc.).
Good luck
Michael
