Passing the emission test is almost impossible - Unless the
car is being moved as part of a household - and you have to
own it for more than 6 Months.
We've moved back from the US about a year ago and decided to
bring a car with us. (one of these not so handy but oh so
comfy full size Vans....) The process is pretty stright
forward - you might have to change a few things - depending
on exact model - we've had the yellow position lights
(parking light) and had to change them to white. Nothing
major - look for a dealership with some experience. Other
than that they will mark the engine block and your
Registration will show type "x" (no type certificate)
One point to consider is availability of spare parts - even
a European style car might have slightly different parts (or
at least part numbers) and this could make small repairs a
lengthly adventure - not to mention potentially costly.
As to shipping - depending on the size of your vehicle - you
might want to consider fitting everything into one
container. (That's what we ended up doing) RORO (Roll-on,
Roll-off) is another option but you would have to fetch your
car in Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Hamburg. The problem there is
that you need license plates on the vehicle there - US
Insurance will not cover operation abroad - and getting
insurance from Switzerland is not possible without Swiss
plates.....
Drop me a note offlist if you need more information.
Regards,
Marcel
