Hi David,
Obviously, getting a regular H1B for industry will not work without
planing a year ahead.
I have a friend in the same situation: Postdoc, J1, and switching
to industry. The way it worked for her: she could not apply for a Green
Card right away. There is a legal issue. By obtaining a J1 you
apparently "promise" to leave the US once you finish your studies.
But, the company she applied with really wanted her. So they found her
some other, non-profit institute where she was employed under an academic
H1B visa that do not have a cap. As a non-profit institute employee she
does
"consulting" services for her company.
So you need: a company that badly wants you, and a competent lawyer that
can
advise you properly.
Good luck
Matthias
