Hello everybody
The situation is this: At the end of July 2005 I moved into the US and started
working at Stanford under H1B (hence, in 2005 I was less than 183 days in the
US). During the first half of 2005, I was employed in Switzerland and payed
Swiss taxes thereafter. In preparation for US tax filing for 2005, I talked to
a tax lawyer who suggested me filing taxes as a "dual-status alien" instead as
a nonresident alien. Does anybody have any experience with this? Do I also have
the option of the "nonresident alien" status for tax purposes? What are the
pros and cons of each of the options? For the tax year 2005, do I have to
declare assets (on bank accounts) and/or capital gain on these assets for both
options?
Any help is much appreciated.
Best,
Chris
