as far as I know, you don't loose years you paid in before. Look on your
AHVs Ausweis (card), call up the last mentioned place you paid in and thez
can give you a print out of your exact contribution.
There is no treaty in place for any type of accumulation of benefits.
As an american wrote, with foreigners, who paid in AHV, they needed to take
out lump sums. I am not sure whether this is still the case. If you are
Swiss, you won't loose any benefits, if you contributed to AHV ( not sure
whether there is a contribution minimum).
In general, as somebody explained already. If you are not a student (i.e. no
income), it is a bad idea to contribute to the voluntary AVS, as you pay 9.7%
or something percent of your taxable income to this institution, while for
every year you don't contribute, your future benefit (i.e. what you receive
from AHV past 65) is only reduced by 2.4% from the maximum payout.
You save only a small part of the 9.7% you would have to pay, it's going to
be worth far more than the money that will ever be paid out to you (if at
all) - even if you live for a very long time after retirement.
Important to know: If you decide to leave voluntary AVS, you can not rejoin
AVS except if you return to CH and work there.
The people at the BVS (bundesamt fuer sozialversicherungen) are nice and
helpful, but surely on vacation now.
