Thanks for the interesting article. There's nothing really unique about the
Swisscom prepaid SIM cards versus other prepaid SIMs. Perhaps the fact that
they were sold without asking the purchaser's identity .... but when I
purchased prepaid SIM cards upon landing at Beijing airport, I was never asked
for my identity either.
Monitoring the phone calls is a totally different affair. All phone companies
are required to provide wiretapping access to law enforcement agencies, even
the mobile phone operators. The radio interface is securely encrypted, so
unauthorized people can't listen on the air, but the authorities gain access to
the unencrypted areas in cooperation with the network operator.
Big Brother is watching, but don't forget that Big Brother also has
insufficient funds and staff for anything but the essential ... and that if you
are a law-abiding citizen ... there is very little chance of being listened to.
