THE PROJECT : SwissNex

SwissNex will be a cooperative exchange platform in San Francisco, to
foster partnerships between Switzerland and Western USA/Canada, in
science & technology, education & entrepreneurship, art & innovation.
In a distinct building, SwissNex will co-locate various organizations
and individuals with a similar goal, including the Swiss Science &
Technology Office. This integrated approach will bring many mutual
benefits to the partners : sharing of contacts and information, tools
and infrastructure, knowledge circulation, mutual support in specific
situations, etc. The resulting critical mass will enable SwissNex to
”make a difference”.

SwissNex will offer shared offices and cooperation to :
1. the Swiss Science & Technology Office, with expanded activities
2. the Technology Monitoring Outpost of Swisscom
3. the West Coast Economic Promotion Office of the Greater Zurich Area
4. the North-American Industrial Internships Office for Communication
Systems and Computer Science students at EPFL, the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology in Lausanne

6. the West Coast representative of CSEM, the Swiss Center for
Electronics and Microtechnology
7. ”innovators in residence”, i.e. Swiss entrepreneurs using SwissNex
for a limited time as beachhead to explore opportunities in the West
(project currently laid out with KTI/CTI)

They might be joined by :
8. the Coordination Office for the partnership currently being
established between the Greater Zurich Area and the San Francisco Bay
Area

SwissNex will also welcome:
9. any individual and organization fostering partnerships between
Switzerland and Western USA/Canada, in fields like science, technology,
education, entrepreneurship, and innovation, excluding commercial
activities.

SWISSNEX BUILDING

Built in 1852 upon the foundations of an earlier building destroyed in
the fire of 1851, the building housed an early newspaper, "The Golden
Era". During the 1860s the building was used as an appliance store, a
crockery shop, and a billiard-table factory. Later, the upper floor was
converted into a meeting hall for the Lafayette Guard, a militia
company. Following the rejuvenation of Jackson Square in the 1950s,
this building housed the showroom for architect-designated furnishings,
and later a world class interdisciplinary design company. The building
is downtown San Francisco, half a block from the Transamerica Pyramid,
about 5 min. walk from the nearest BART station, and 10 min. walk from
the Embarcadero Ferry Terminal.
