Hi all,

The following notice received from the American Physical Society may be
relevant to several swiss-listers.

Greetings,

Subject: Visa Alert

Dear Colleague:

Your foreign students, post-docs and some long-time visitors will face
difficulties returning to the US after foreign travel unless their visas are
valid beyond the date of their return to the US and are multiple-entry
visas. Please take note of the following warning posted on the Web Site of
the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services of the Department of
Homeland Security (formerly the INS):

"Caution: Due to recent changes to U.S. immigration law, travel outside of
the United States may have severe consequences for aliens who are in the
process of adjusting their status, extending their nonimmigrant stay, or
changing their nonimmigrant status. Upon return, these aliens may be found
inadmissible, their applications may be denied, or both. It is important
that the alien obtain the proper documentation before leaving the U.S."

Please alert all of your foreign graduate students and post-docs to this
issue and ask that the appropriate university authorities advise them before
they leave the country. The APS is aware of a great many instances in which
students and colleagues who have reapplied for F-1 and J-1 visas abroad have
been stranded, some for as long as six months, waiting for adjudication of
their visa applications. Everyone should use extreme caution as rules and
procedures have changed and continue to change. Even those who are citizens
of countries that are long-term US allies may face serious problems if they
were born in a different country.

Here are two websites that provide additional information:
(http://www.aps.org/intaff/visa/) and the Bureau Web Site
(http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/index.htm).
