I just talked to the consulate general in Lyon today, and they told me
it will take 3 months to get the new passport. The backlog is huge, and
they are only now in the process of increasing production. We are going
to order the new passport, while keeping the old one. Once the new one
comes to the consulate, we are going to mail in our old one, as we
surely will not be able to be without a passport for several months. The
additional fee here in France is small.
