You may want to float your questions on the German list also:

Ther has been a flurry of returnees asking questions there in the past
few months, sore lore on the matter must have accumulated there...

Subject: swiss-list: Moving back: Container to CH / Customs / Taxes /
Car

Dear List,

I am moving back to CH after 3.5 years in the USA. I have also decided
to take my car along with me as well as a few things. They are all being
put into a container and shipped to Genoa. The process seems to cost
1390$ for a 20ft container, from warehouse to warehouse (drop off/pick
up). I would then be driving from Italy to CH. I will also be working
for a few months more in the USA, but would like to ship this ASAP.

I have a few questions:

1) Does this price seem reasonable? Heard of any other prices? What
about to CH itself? I am getting another estimate for Rotterdam and
Antwerpen tomorrow.
2) What do I need to do to clear customs? Both Italian and Swiss,
countries where I still do not live in.
3) Do I need to be already registered in CH in order to have the stuff
arrive there?
4) My car insurance will not work in Europe. Can anyone recommend where
I can get one and a cost estimate?
5) How long can I use the car with US plates?

Thank you all,
Patrick
