All you need to do is to get the registration for your car in California.
This will require a smog check and proof of insurance. It is just like
buying a car in California.
You should become an AAA member (if you are not already a member) once you
are in Californa. AAA has registration services too. The people there will
tell you exactly what you need to do, and there is never a line. When we
moved from Rhode Island to California we had both our cars registered
through AAA, and the process went very smoothly. We never had to go to the
DMV at all (only to get a California Driver's License, but that is a
different story...)
