I did. 1990 Suzuki GSXR-1100. Initially everything went well at the DMV (except
at first they didn't want to let me take the driving test because it was
raining and "Sir, when it rains it can be very slippery" !!!?!?!?!). Then the
registration itself went through very quickly and I got a plate and temporary
registration...

However, it's later on that things began to stink. After enjoying the bike for
almost a year, they sent me a "second notice" (never seen the first one)
telling me to return immediately all papers and indicia issued by the DMV for
that motorcycle. It turns out that I am supposed to provide proof (a letter
from Suzuki would be fine, if they answered to my requests) showing that this
bike is similar to one that was produced at the same time for the US. I tried
to argue that: 1) there is no smog control on bikes 2) I have some emission
data from the Swiss DMV and could provide that document 3) when you see what
the local cars and bikes are spewing out in the air, it makes you think that
they have bigger fish to fry, 4) my bike has more than X thousand miles (forgot
the value of X, but that's a value after which normally they accept CARS from
abroad without too much fuss over emissions), and 5) what exactly were the smog
standards for bikes in 1989?

The answers that were mumbled back to me over the phone were evidently from
somebody who didn't give a damn and was kind of angry anyway to be in that job.

So, I haven't returned my plate and paperwork, but they haven't renewed my
registration either. In short, I can't use the bike now (last registration
sticker says 2001). I am contemplating selling it to a friend in Nevada, and
let him use it when he comes to visit in SF...
