Dear Swiss list members,
I wonder whether other J1 visa holder have heard the same: Recently a new rule was issued concerning issue of number plates to J1 holders. Two weeks ago a friend of mine arrived here in Baton Rouge on a J1. He was told by the local motor vehicle department that J1 holders are not eligible anymore to buy cars nor can they get a number plate. Also, only if one stays at least two years in the country, it is possible to get a state driver's licence. These are new rules issued because of September 11th!
I am curious whether this is just a Louisiana problem or whether other people have experienced the same. I wonder how anybody will be able to come to LA without being able to buy/have a car since public transportation does not exist in this part of the country.
Regards
Claudia Nett
Baton Rouge
