My wife and I like to stay at Sea Ranch (north of San Francisco, close to
Gualala). It is fairly isolated, you overlook the bluff from your outside
jacuzzi... Phenomenal. Since there are no cities anywhere close to this
place, the night sky is spectacular (again from the jacuzzi it is great
too...) Then if you like driving and you happen to have a zippy little car
with good suspension, nothing beats this part of Hwy 1 from Mendocino to San
Francisco. Weekdays are best to avoid getting stuck behind slow cars. The
landscape between Sea Ranch and the Russian river sometimes reminds me of
Switzerland (lots of cows' pastures and steep hills). It really is gorgeous
over there.
