Marc and Joel:
Thanks for your answers. Last night, after posting the original
message, I did a little bit of homework and reached the same conclusion
as you guys. As resident aliens in the US we have to declare
everything. As I understand it now, I have two options: (1) never file
in CH (and live with 35% tax on the interest there) but declare it on
my US tax return and claim a foreign tax credit. Or, (2) declare it
here, pay taxes on the interest in the US, and get the entire 35% back
in CH.
As I mentioned in my first message I want to e-file. But on HRBlock's
web form I couldn't figure out how to fill out the equivalent of the
1116 form (foreign tax credit). So there goes option (1). Option (2)
involves more paperwork in CH. *sigh*
Thanks again,
--Radu
