Hi Werner and other Swiss listers,

I'm sorry to hear, that you got annoyed with us after such a short time.
The Swiss List has grown a lot in the 5 to 6 years of its being, and
also the people, or at least the active writer change all the time.
I think the Swiss list contains so many people now, that it is hard to
put them all in one pot. There is helpful people, people that are
excited about the adventure "America" and people that are here too long
and want to go home.

My experience with the Swiss people here is, that most fit into 2
groups, and then there is always the odd exception to the rule.
Group number 1, heavily represented in the Swiss List, is the people
that really like Switzerland, but want to go out and experience
something different for a limited time. They come for a postdoc, and
internship, an exchange year or something similar, but with the mind se
to going back in a relatively short time. These people often do not
build lasting friendships with non Europeans, are a little homesick, and
criticize the American civilization a lot. But I think it is still a
good experience for a lot of people to do so, they will be changed when
they go back, and will bring fresh ideas to Switzerland.

The other big group of people is the ones that feel Switzerland is too
small. They come here for permanent, and if they don't like it, they go
some other place on the planet. These people connect much faster with
the Americans, because this is there home of choice and they want to
stay here. They still are probably more critical to the culture here
than the average citizen, they have seen other parts of the world, but
the have chosen the disadvantages of US over the disadvantages of CH.
These are often the people that stop being active writers in the Swiss
list, but still part of it.

Yes the Swiss list has sometimes discussions that proves we are all
coming from a small country, and it left its marks on us, but still we
try to help each other if there are questions coming up.

Give us a chance

        Anne
