BRAIN DRAIN RESEARCH / ELECTRONIC QUESTIONNAIRE

I have been hired by Gebert-Ruef foundation to conduct
research about the Swiss "Brain Drain". The
research „Brain Drain“ is a research project on Swiss
PhDs in the United States. Its goal is to understand
the motivations of Swiss PhD’s – and especially post-
docs – to leave Switzerland and migrate to the United
States, as well as to identify elements that might be
put into place to motivate / facilitate a return.

This research is focusing on a population of people who:

a) Are Swiss nationals
b) Have a PhD
c) Live in the United States

The project mainly focuses on people who finished their
PhD within the last 12 years. However, everyone fitting
criteria a,b and c is most welcome to answer the
questionnaire.

Some of you will accidentally be contacted several
times for the same matter, and I might even have met
some of you. Since some databases are overlapping (and
this has been sent to the general address “swiss-
list”), I unfortunately have no control over that. I
wish to apologize to each person who receives this
message more than once.

Additionally, after receiving the electronic
questionnaire, some persons pointed out different
elements:
For MDs – A general category PhDs was established. I
should have mentioned that this includes MDs too. So,
despite the fact that the questionnaire will not be
specifically designed for MDs (title PhD versus MD), I
would be grateful if people with an MD could fill out
the questionnaire too. They will then be analyzed as a
subcategory.
Some questions need to be answered in order to be able
to submit the questionnaire at the end. So should you
wish to skip a question, just insert a sign (such as x,
NA or anything you wish) into the text box.

You can be assured that any data and information will
be treated confidentially, and that no information you
might give will be used for any other purpose than this
research.

The „Brain Drain“ research is conducted with the
assistance of the Fonds National Suisse, the Swiss
Science & Technology Offices in the United States
(Boston, San Francisco, Washington), and is funded by
Gebert-Ruef Stiftung (a private foundation in Basel,
Switzerland).

You can access the questionnaire directly by clicking

I thank you in advance for your time and help.

Sincerely,
