PROGRAM
6.30 pm Cocktail (courtesy of Mr. Alfred Baehler, Consul General of

7.30 pm Dinner, followed by the presentation :

THE SEMICONDUCTOR AGE
by Prof. Eugene E. Haller, University of California at Berkeley
Materials have given their name to the major evolutionary periods of
mankind : the stone age, the bronze age, the iron age. Applying a number
of criteria, we can call the present era the semiconductor age or the
silicon age. Why are semiconductor sensors, amplifiers, central
processors, memories, etc. so crucial to our computers, communication
devices, scientific instruments and even leisure activities ? It is the
versatile properties of the semiconductors as well as the construction
of ever more intricate and sophisticated ”integrated circuits” on
”silicon chips” which will keep the semiconductor revolution going for
the foreseeable future.
In this talk, the major stations of the semiconductor history from the
humble beginnings in the last century towards the most sophisticated
integrated circuits of today will be reviewed. It will be shown that new
semiconductor materials are being discovered and that the science and
technology of this unique group of materials continue to offer surprises
and novel applications.

SPEAKER
Eugene E. Haller is Professor of Materials Science at UC Berkeley and
holds a joint appointment at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
where he heads the Electronics Materials Program. He received his PhD
from the University of Basel in Switzerland, authored and co-authored
