swiss-list: H-1 and health insurance

Hi all,
I am in the process of switching from a J-1 visa to a H-1 visa sponsored by
the University of California (official title: post-graduate researcher). As
J-1, health insurance is usually not provided by the Institution, but as
H-1 it is my understanding that the employer has to provide this coverage.
Is there any obligation for the employer to also cover family members
(spouse and children)? What are the general conditions in Academia and/or
in private companies? Any info on the subject will be helpful. I already
tried several related websites (federal and state agencies and UC
regulations) and tested some search engines without much success, so I
would appreciate if you could provide info leading rather directly to
relevant info (i.e., from personal experience).
Thanks in advance,
Pierre
