Project management experience
Responsabilities
The candidate will report directly to the laboratory director, and will
be his deputy. She or he will have responsibilities in teaching and
research, will contribute to industrial liaison, and assume
administrative duties. She or he will develop a small research group
made up of research engineers and doctoral students, which she or he
will directly supervise.
Teaching
Two courses a year in the 1st and 2d cycles
Possible participation postgraduate course
Supervision of one to three doctoral students
Supervision of semester and senior projects
Research
Responsibility for the domain design, design theory and optimization
Proposal preparation and supervision of research projects, mainly CTI
and NSF.
Active role in long term research of the laboratory; publication in
refereed journals, Industrial Liaison and Tech Transfer
Partially responsible for industrial liaisons
Participate actively in technical and scientific professional societies
Execute small consulting contracts

Laboratory for Design of Mechanical Systems

The Laboratory for Design of Mechanical Systems (LCSM) is part of the
Institute for Design Analysis and Production of Mechanical Systems
(ICAP) of the Mechanical Engineering Department. It has a threefold
mission of teaching, research and scientific and technical support of
the Swiss economy in the field of design of mechanical systems. It
fulfills this mission in close collaboration with the other three
laboratories of ICAP in particular through the activities of the Center
for Advanced Rapid Tooling (CART).

The general goals of the activities within LCSM are to (1) educate
technical and scientific leaders for the Swiss machine industry, (2)
transfer to industry novel technologies that will contribute to growth
and employment stability, and (3) provide industry with design tools and
technical support to apply these technologies.
Teaching

LCSM teaches a scientific approach to mechanical design, in which
analysis and synthesis play a complementary role and are used
iteratively to design machines meeting scientifically determined
specifications. Emphasis is put on project-based teaching as well as
interdisciplinary and group work.

Research

The main focus of research within LCSM is on basic long-term, high
risk/high payoff research.
The system approach to design of production machines considers the
machine itself, but also the process and the part, with process and part
fixing the machine specifications. In the future, machines should be
more and more capable of self-management, that is to say, they should be
able to diagnose their working state (which influences part quality et
production rate) and correct for any deviation with respect to the
desired performance.

To make this vision come true, four areas of competencies are developed
and maintained within LCSM, namely in dynamics, materials and processes,
mechatronics, and design and optimization. Research within LCSM
builds on the synergy of these four areas of competencies to develop,
analyze and optimize new processes, as well as machines that will
implement them. In particular, research focuses on:

High-speed and hard machining, together with automated, mechanical
surface finishing processes.
Design and integration of systems that will allow reliable and
economical implementation of these processes.
Design of monitoring and adjustment methods for these processes and the
machines implementing them, allowing active on-line part quality
control.

The objectives of this research, which is part of the general activities
of the Center for Advanced Rapid Tooling (CART), are to minimize
production time and cost of machined parts, more specifically of plastic
injection molds, while improving their quality.
Industrial support

LCSM supports Swiss industry by

Providing it with engineers with a high level of competencies that will
serve as technical and scientific leaders.
Transferring to industry technologies and design tools through
collaborative projects (CTI type projects) or short-term contracts.
Making available equipment and infrastructures that are not readily
accessible for industry, particularly small and medium-size companies.
