Hi everybody,
Some of you probably found out that there is an article in today's
San Francisco Chronicle (front page) about a nearing $50 million
alliance between UC Berkeley and Novartis. This would be a five-year
deal bringing $5 million a year in research grants to the College of
Natural Resources specialising in mapping out genes in agricultural
products. There are also talks about an additional $25 million
funding for new laboratories at the UC Berkeley campus. Novartis
would have a up to 120 days to look over research results emerging
from that sponsoring and then decide whether to get patent rights.
The article discusses interesting side-effecs that could emerge
from the deal.
