«« Boundaries and Meaning in Landscapes : From Science to Art and
Back »»
Boundaries are an ever-shifting phenomenon in our lives that are full
of meaning and consequences. Using the opening of Prof. Ariel Ruiz i
Altaba’s exhibit Minimal Landscapes as a jumping-off point, swissnex
San Francisco presents an evening of spirited discussion on the
relationship between art and science.
The round-table discussion will be conducted by Dr Leonard Shlain,
Chairman of Laparoscopic Surgery at the California Pacific Medical
Center and author of various books and articles on the subjects. The
panelists of this round-table include: the artist and Professor at
the University of Geneva Ariel Ruiz i Altaba, gallery owner Stephen
Wirtz, LBNL Professor Emeritus of Chemistry John Hearst, author
Piero Scaruffi, SF-MOMA curator Rudolf Frieling, and University of
San Francisco Professor of Chemistry Tami Spector.
This event is sponsored by Think Swiss (www.thinkswiss.org) and co-
sponsored by the Leonardo Scientists Working Group
(www.leonardo.info). Think Swiss is a US-wide program on Education,
Research and Innovation. The program is under the auspices of
Presence Switzerland (PRS), the Swiss State Secretariat for Education
and Research (SER) and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

---- SEPTEMBER 20 - OCTOBER 12, 2007, 11.00 AM – 5:00 PM (Mon-Fri only !) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---- «« Minimal Landscapes Exhibition »» As part of ThinkSwiss - Brainstorm the future - swissnex San Francisco brings you an exhibit presenting a series of 15 prints from the artist and scientist Ariel Ruiz i Altaba. The exhibition opens on September 19th, kicked off by a round-table discussion on the relationship between art and science : “Boundaries and Meaning in Landscapes: From Science to Art and Back”. “Minimal Landscapes represents an exploration of form in its essence, devoid of distracting elements. The photographic images show black islands forming archipelagoes of explicit and implicit meanings that become imaginary landscapes in the viewer’s mind. Each image is the approximation of actual living form to classical minimal perfection.” Ariel Ruiz i Altaba has exhibited his art work internationally in private and museum collections in the USA and in Europe. He is also Jeantet Professor at the School of Medicine of the University of Geneva. Due to increased competition and difficulty in bringing new and innovative products to market, aligning R&D and commercial functions has been an area of increasing focus for the last 15 years. The industry has been forced to define ways to address these challenges and ensure that scarce R&D and commercial resources are focused on the most commercially viable targets. Attempts to address these challenges have resulted in various models incorporating cross- functional project teams, aligning around a therapeutic area, or establishing cross-functional portfolio decision-making bodies. This session will cover the drivers for early commercialization models improvements, explore the paradoxes it can create and what it takes to develop the right product for tomorrow leveraging relationships between sciences, sales and marketing. 7:30 am Breakfast and Networking 8:00 am Program with speakers including Jean-Marc Niemetz, Vice President of Global Life Science, Capgemini, and Kristi Jones, Director of Sales, Genentech Details and registration : http://www.faccsf.com/Events/LFB_August07.htm Location & parking : http://www.swissnexsanfrancisco.org/aboutus/contactReceived on Thu Aug 30 2007 - 15:33:03 PDT
