Community Involvement for Children and Families"
organized by The Palo ALto Menlo Park Mothers Club

DATE: Tuesday, June 8, 2004
TIME: 7:00-9:30pm (first half hour is for socializing
& meeting with non profit organization
representatives).
LOCATION:Lucie Stern Community Room
        1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto
COST: Free for members and $5/guest

What developmental assets do children need to
enthusiastically start giving, sharing or being
resourceful in their community? How do parents build a
long term strategy to unshelter them and raise
sensitive & caring teens? Where and how can my
children start to participate in community activities?
What charitable organisations are available in our
area? Which ones are age-appropriate for my children?
How do I start my own community activity? What does it
take to make this an enjoyable family tradition? How
do I handle the emotional reactions our family may
have?
We have invited a panel of four experts. First, Pam
von Wiegand, Senior Vice President of YMCA , Santa
Clara County, will share with us the result of a study
addressing the challenges of raising healthy families.
The study has identified 40 developmental assets
that wealthy and poor children alike need to acquire
to build strong families (and communities). Assets
range from self-esteem to interpersonal skills, as
well as having creative activities, a sense of purpose
and access to a broad variety of adult role models.
Pam will discuss the actions we can take to help
children of the Santa Clara County increase the number
of developmental assets they have (sadly, children
only have in average 18.5 of the 40 assets). In order
to raise children that are sensitive to the need of
others and enthusiast to get involved in their
community, children must have enough developmental
assets while growing up.
Second, three local advocates familiar with our club
will discuss how to get us started to help relieve
poverty, homelessness and preserve the environment. Al
Teglia, from the Human Services Agency, County of San
Mateo, will address all the ways families can
help/partner with underprivileged families. Eve
Agiewich of the Clara-Mateo Alliance, Inc., will
suggest us how to help end homelessness in the area.
Finally, Richard Bicknell, ranger of the City of Palo
Alto, will tell us how to get our children involved in
hands-on activities to keep the environment clean and
healthy.
Regardless of the causes your family identifies with,
join us for an evening that will kick off your family
tradition of giving and making a difference in our
community!
