Dear all,
I've been asked to forward this to the list, extending the invitation
for the "St Martin's Laternenumzug" of the German American School of San
Francisco (http://www.germanamericanschool.org/) to the Swiss community
in the Bay Area. It's a wonderful event (the school is good to if you
are looking for a bilingual education for your kids!).

Zum Laternenumzug / To the lantern parade
“St. Martin”
At the German-American School of San Francisco,

At 6pm on Thursday, Nov.8, 2001
The legend goes that Martin was a Roman soldier riding on his horse through the
winter. On his way, he encountered a beggar who was shivering from the cold.
Martin stopped, took off his warm coat and shared half of it with the poor
fellow. Martin, who years later became a bishop and a saint, and his gesture
stand for sharing, and feeling responsible for your fellow-men. St.Martin is
celebrated in the form of lantern parades in November.
Die Legende besagt, dass Martin als römischer Soldat auf seinem Pferd durch die
Winterlandschaft ritt, als er auf einen Bettler traf, der vor Kälte zitterte.
Martin hielt an, zog seinen warmen Mantel aus und teilte ihn mit dem armen
Menschen. Martin, der Jahre später ein Bischof und heilig gesprochen wurde, und
seine Geste stehen für Teilen und das Verantwortungsbewusstsein gegenüber dem
Mitmenschen. St. Martin wird in der Form eines Laternenumzuges im November
gefeiert.
All children and parents who would like to participate in the lantern parade
should meet in the schoolyard of the German-American School. At 6pm we will
start with a shadow theater followed by the lantern parade at 6:30pm. We’ll
walk around the neighborhood, sing “lantern songs” and have a gingerbread man
and warm punch upon returning to the schoolyard after the parade.
Alle Kinder und Eltern, die an dem Laternenumzug teilnehmen möchten, treffen
sich um 18 Uhr auf dem Schulhof der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Schule. Wir beginnen
mit einem Schattenspiel. Der Umzug beginnt um 18:30 Uhr. Wir werden durch die
Nachbarschaft ziehen und Martinslieder singen. Nach dem Umzug gibt es
Martinsmännchen und Punsch auf unserem Schulhof.
If you like to make your own lantern please bring a milk carton and come and
join us in the kindergarten from 5:30pm-7:30pm on Nov.5.
Falls Sie mit uns ihre Laterne basteln wollen, so bringen Sie bitte einen
Milchkarton mit und kommen zu unserem Kindergarten zwischen 17:30-19:30Uhr am
5.Nov.
To order your gingerbread man ($3 per piece) please email infodas_at_tsoft.com or
call the school office at 650-324-8617 latest by this Friday, Nov.2.
Wenn Sie ein Martinsmännchen ($3 pro Männchen) bestellen wollen emailen Sie
bitte infodas_at_tsoft.com oder rufen Sie das Sekretariat (650-324-8617) bis
spätestens Freitag, den 2.Nov. an.
