SHARE, Consulate of Switzerland, (Swiss House for Advanced Research and
Education) and the American Swiss Foundation of New York are pleased to
invite you to a panel discussion on Tuesday 28th October, at 420
Broadway, Cambridge (www.SHAREBoston.org <http://www.shareboston.org/> )
:

Medicare Reform and the Future of Pharmaceutical Research

* The United States is the world's leader in scientific and
technological research and the world's largest market for the
pharmaceutical industry
* However, Americans are paying the highest drug prices in the
world
* Pressure is on to bring drug prices down
* Congress is laboring to pass Medicare reform legislation to
provide subsidized prescription drug benefits to 40 million, primarily
elderly, Medicare beneficiaries

How will the outcome of pending reform efforts affect the future of
research and U.S. healthcare?

A distinguished panel will debate this and other related healthcare
issues, such as:

Why are drug prices escalating as a percentage of overall healthcare
costs? Is research getting more expensive? Do breakthroughs come at a
higher cost? Are marketing costs driving prices up? How should
government and the free market interact in this process? Will lower
prices cause cutbacks in drug research, or, alternatively, will
increased demand boost drug research? What, then, will be the impact on
the future development of life-saving "miracle drugs"? And how will that
affect global pharmaceutical corporations such as Swiss-based Novartis
and the many Cambridge-based firms in this field ?
