Hi,
We were in the very same situation in Spring 2005. Don't even
think about traveling if you don't have a valid visa or advanced
parole. You won't be able to come back and they will consider
your immigration process abandoned. Also, as others mentioned,
you can't obtain another J-1 because you made an attempt to
immigrate. That simply means you're stuck in the US and there
is no solution for this. We never tried to find out what would
happen in case of an emergency. We filed for advanced parole
Oct 1 and got it a few days ago...so I wouldn't count on 4 weeks.
