In case you have a child you want to send to a child care center, apply for a waiting list position even before you leave Switzerland.
Depending on the age of the child, you may have to wait for 6 months for an opening. On Stanford campus, I would recommend the SCCC over Arboretum. If the child is older than 18 months, it is normally easier (and a bit cheaper) to find a place. In Menlo Park, I recommend the M.P. Children Center (community operated). For people in Berkeley, the Housing and Dining Service web page has a section devoted to childcare.
