Health Insurance

Health services are very expensive in the US, and you should be covered for that.

By the way, many employers (especially academic ones) will not accept you if you cannot prove you have valid health insurance. In some cases, when you are regularly employed (paid) by your US employer (i.e., you are not paid by some external grant), the employer (e.g., Berkeley Lab) pays your health coverage. However more often than not, it's up to you. If you are employed by a company you can usually get very cheap insurance for the whole family from your employer.

Otherwise, there are three possibilities:

  1. Additional coverage while abroad with your Swiss health-care provider. It may only cover emergencies (i.e., no pregnancy). It is expensive but might be the most comfortable solution, since you never have to change.
  2. Private insurance (e.g., Loga or Solitaritaetsfond der Auslandsschweizer). Very good coverage but very expensive.
  3. There are about 20 different US health plans for academic visitors. All cover the legally required minimum, but vary heavily in their costs and coverage. Be careful: many of them do not cover you while you are visiting your home country (except Cowell Health Service in Stanford)! Prices: acceptable to expensive.
