[Please note that the rules for shipping gifts are actually different (with
respect to the dates you need to file and it specifically says that you don't
need the different CBP identifiers). Check this page:

to file, not the receiver, so suprise packages are not a problem. The

Re: swiss-list: Rules regarding Food imports into the US?I am reading this
stuff on the http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/ website, and it sounds absolutely
ridiculous, not to mention impractical as far as packages sent from
Switzerland are concerned. I mean: "Notice is required no more than 5 days
before arrival and no fewer than 8 hours before arrival by water"??? How are
you going to determine when a package sent by land/sea is going to arrive,
since it can take anywhere between 2-6 weeks? And arrive where? At your
house or in the NY Harbor?

And how would you know all this information:
a.. Entry type and CBP identifier
a.. The identification of the article of food, including complete FDA
product code, the common or usual name or market name, the estimated
quantity described from the smallest package size to the largest container,
and the lot or code numbers or other identifier (if applicable)
a.. The identification of the manufacturer
a.. The identification of the grower, if known
a.. The FDA Country of Production
etc. etc.

Also, what about packages that you receive unsolicited, i.e. surprise
packages??

None of this seems to make any sense in terms of private mail containing
small amounts of packaged, commercial, gift-type food. Yet the only food
that is exempt is "food made by an individual in his/her personal residence"
which, again, makes hardly any sense. Why would my mom's cookies be safer
than those purchased at the Migros?!?

I'm curious how others on the list interpret this absurd way of "protecting
ourselves against bioterrorism".
