You are invited to join your fellow Alumni for the 2nd North-American
Swiss Alumni Convention, April 5-6, 2003, at the St. Francis Yacht Club
in San Francisco, CA!

Building nET(H)works & bridges

This year's annual convention of the Swiss Federal Institutes' North
American Alumni will feature several members and brains of the Swiss
America's Cup Challenge Alinghi (supported by the EPF Lausanne
www.alinghi.com). We are also having sessions on the vision and mission
of alumni organizations, brain-drain, talent mobility and knowledge
transfer. We will explore tools to reconnect to the job market at home.
The leadership of both institutes and the vice-chancellor of UC Berkeley
will take positions. The Swiss schools will present their alumni
concepts and new service concepts. As per definition you will meet
fellow Alumni working for local tech firms and global multinationals.
Add to that tons of power-networking opportunities, great views on the
San Francisco Bay, a Cruise-Brunch on the Bay, and overall great food &
wine!

The event is organized by the American Alumni Association of the Swiss
Federal Institutes of Technology (A3SFIT), but we would like to extend
the invitation to the Alumni of IMD and HSG as well as the SNF supported
researchers in North-America. Of course the interested public is welcome.

Please use the Acteva site

at this Convention and get the latest info on the program, on hotel
accomodations, and link to the St. Francis Yacht Club website for

10:20 - 11:00 Roundtable: The Ins and Outs of Alumni Organizations
Although an established American model, alumni organizations exist in
Europe as well. Still the many stakeholders have various interests. With
the change of guard at the alumni organizations of the ETH Zürich and EPF
Lausanne opportunities arise to develop and mold this tool - beyond the
role models. What are the key assets of alumni networks? What services do
current organizations offer?
What services should they offer, what have they tried and did not work?
(Eric Merck (EPF Lausanne), Eduard Brunner (ETH Alumni),
MIT/Harvard, McKinsey & Co.)

11:00 - 11:20 Coffee & nET(H)working break

11:20 - 12:00 Roundtable: Moving Talent - Moving Knowledge
Brain-Drain vs Knowledge Mobility
Bye-bye talent or how do we manage knowledge and people
State-funded talent leaves the home country to pursue academic research and
careers abroad. Further, companies transfer their executives to gain
experience and mobilize knowledge. Not all return to their home country. In
addition, we find that in-house knowledge rests with the individual and not
with the organization - be it here or afar.
Do we simply export the best talent without return? What are the key
considerations and milestones in pursuing a global career? What solutions
and tools have been found to mobilize people and share knowledge across
continents and oceans?
(Christian Simm (Swiss Science & Technology Consul), Eicke Weber
(University of California, Berkeley - German Scholar Organization), NN, NN)

12:00 - 13:30 Lunch - Keynote Speech: UC Berkeley and its Alumni Heritage
(working title)
(Donald McQuade, Vice Chancellor - University Relations,
University of California, Berkeley)

13:30 - 15:00 A successful partnership between competition in sport and
science: Alinghi and the EPFL
On its first entry, the Swiss America's Cup Challenge won the Louis Vuitton
Cup. Executed with Swiss precision in its Swiss way attracting the best
talent. A unique look behind the scenes will show the science and
entrepreneurial talent that made the success possible.
(Bertrand Cardis (Decision SA), Members of the Alinghi Consortium,
Jan-Anders Månson)
in between: Coffee & nET(H)working break

15:00 - 16:45 Working Session on the Future of the Swiss Alumni
