Short stay or the first week

In case you stay in the US just a little while, you will most likely be very busy. On the other hand, people arriving for a longer stay will be even busier the first week. During this first week, you will usually need to meet your new boss, find some lodging, and start all the administrative tasks you are supposed to fulfill (see the other tips). You will be better off if you know were you will live during this first week. Beside special arrangements (friends), you can stay at a hotel, motel or bed and breakfast. Check the resources from the university you are visiting or ask the HR department of your new company to help you find something. If you start a new job you may want to ask for travel relocation payment (or signon bonus), but be aware that you usually have to pay income tax on it.

Sometimes you can also find lodging in the classified ads. However, you might want to check by yourself before buying... Being able to move around is also important. Remember! This is America. Public transportation is not always very convenient, and it may be a good idea to rent a car especially when you are looking for housing. It is convenient to rent a car with the companies that have an office at whatever airport you arrive. They often offer discounts for people traveling by plane (fly and drive, as well as frequent flyer's discounts).
