Case in point, mine: I went from H-1B to tourist (asked for 5 months,
change of status) to H-1B again (was approved way after the 5-months
of tourism were over, change of status again) without ever leaving the
US.

I did not enter the country as a tourist though, but I'm not sure if
it makes a difference. This is what you want to check.
