Folks,
Standard disclaimer applies. I'm not a tax nor a INS
professional.

If you have residency and income in the US for the
first half of the tax year and then move to CH and
establish residency and have income in CH for the
second part of the year, you have to file taxes in
both countries. Again filing taxes in the US is a must
if you are a green card holder. Check the tax
brochure. There is a calculation if you have residency
in the US for a certain amount of time you can deduct
a substantial amount and in my case get my income back
to 0. I then received a refund check for the taxes
paid in the US. Please remember that filing taxes does
not mean you are going to pay taxes.

I never checked if I can deduct the taxes I paid in
Switzerland from the US taxes, because in my case I
never ended up paying taxes in both countries in the
same year because the deduction got my income back to
0 in one year and an other year I didn't meet the
minimum number of days of residency to have to pay
taxes in the US.

Sooner or later you will loose your green card. Get
the extended green card and you are ok for 18 months.
Then check with the US embassy in CH. They seemed to
be more attuned to questions like this then the local
INS office.

Eventhough I did not loose my green card I don't know
once I apply for US citizenship if my extended
absences will be a liability. Something else to
consider.

Good luck
Ursula
