First Announcement
Call for Participation
CSCS Visiting Researcher Program (VRP2000)
Summary
-------
As part of its educational initiative, the Swiss Center for
Scientific Computing (CSCS) has traditionally conducted two
separate visiting student programs (PRSS and SSIP) which
offered a unique opportunity to students from within
Switzerland and abroad to work on specific projects during
their stay at CSCS.
From this year onwards, CSCS is proud to announce the Visiting
Researcher Program (VRP) which continues its tradition of
educational exchange at the national and international level.
This new program (VRP2000) which supersedes the two previous
separate programs offers additional possibilities to not only
young students but also junior and senior researchers active
in their field to broaden their horizons of knowledge and gain
unique experience during their stay at CSCS.
While interacting with experts within and outside of CSCS,
invited applicants will either carry out a project proposed by
CSCS or will have the freedom to define and conduct their own
project relevant for CSCS. Topics include but are not limited
to problems in computational modeling, computer graphics and
visualization, software engineering and information
processing.
Program
-------
The program will commence in July 2000 with a period of stay
from a few weeks to a maximum of 4 months, during which the
invited applicant is expected to carry out a specific project
in close collaboration with CSCS staff. At the end of their
stay at CSCS, all invited applicants are expected to summarize
their achievements in a report and in the form of a formal
presentation. Work of exceptionally high quality may be funded
for possible presentation in conferences and/or publications.
Projects
--------
Candidates may choose to work on projects proposed by CSCS in
the following areas
* Computational Modeling
* Graphics and Visualization
* Software Engineering
* Information Processing
* Systems, Network & Infrastructure
A list of these projects is available at the following URL:
http://www.cscs.ch/education/edu_vrp00_proj.html
Alternatively, applicants may propose their own projects in
the above topic areas, which if accepted may be pursued during
the program.
CSCS will provide all the required technical infrastructure
(e.g. office space, computing resources etc.) to successfully
complete the project.
Financial Support
-----------------
Candidates are strongly encouraged to seek funding from
indigenous sources. For those without adequate funding of
their own, CSCS will pay a fixed stipend (not exceeding CHF
2200 per month) to cover the stay and travel expenses.
Application Guidelines
----------------------
The program is open to Swiss and foreign postgraduate students
and researchers with background and research interests in
Computational and/or Computer Sciences and Engineering.
Undergraduate students of exceptional merit intending to
pursue higher education in these areas may also apply.
Applications will be screened to invite a limited number of
applicants.
All applicants who wish to apply for the program are strongly
advised to follow the following application guidelines:
1. If you would like to undertake one of the projects
proposed by CSCS, read through the subject areas of
projects. Think carefully about the kind of work you are
best qualified to do and most interested in doing.
2. If you would like to propose your own project, clearly
write a brief project description and a work plan
(maximum of 3 to 4 pages) describing the means of
achieving the objectives of your proposal and include it
in your application.
3. Take a good note of the application process deadlines.
Due to organizational constraints we cannot consider any
non-Swiss applications after the March 31, 2000 deadline.
4. Fill out completely the application form available at URL
http://www.cscs.ch/education/edu_vrp00_ap.txt
Send it along with your curriculum vitae (CV) and project
description (if applicable) via e-mail to VRP2000_at_cscs.ch
by March 31, 2000 for non-Swiss applicants and by
April 30, 2000 for Swiss applicants.
All these documents should be send in PLAIN ASCII text ONLY.
Applications received in other formats may not be read.
5. You will be notified of the acceptance decision by email
approximately 1 week after the submission deadline.
IMPORTANT : For non-Swiss Applicants
------------------------------------
This ONLY applies if you are non-Swiss AND if you are accepted
for the program.
Non-Swiss applicants accepted for the program should be in a
position to send us a variety of documents and information
immediately via surface mail upon receiving the acceptance
notification from the program organizers. This information is
mandatory to acquire the required work permit from the Swiss
federal authorities.
We must receive these by April 30, 2000 at the very latest in
order that you receive your work permit before leaving for
Switzerland.
