Dear Swiss-Listers,
Most of you have studied at a Swiss university. Now you are familiar
with the American system. Your opinion on similarities and differences
between the two, and on what the Swiss should know about the American
is of great value. Please look at the program of our next event (see
below) : delegates from various Swiss universities will be at swissnex,
and would be grateful to have you participating in the discussions ...
Hoping to CU next week !
Best
Christian

"Lausanne, first European City granted with the European Energy Award
Gold & The Role of Innovation for Sustainable Development of the Energy
Sector"
The European Energy Award. (eea.) is a European certification and
quality management system which rewards cities and towns with a label
for outstanding efforts in the field of energy efficiency and the use
of renewable energies. It consists of three main elements : (1)
Establishment of a total quality management system (TQM) for communal
energy-related activities; (2) Certification and award for
energy-related achievements in two award categories and control of
success through regular audits; (3) Establishment of a network within
the community and between communities through increased co-operation
and communication.
Innovation plays a crucial role for sustainable development of the
energy sector, i.e. the creation of economic, environmental and social
value. This includes (1) how innovation emerges and is commercialized
in existing and new firms of the energy sector, including the role of
venture capital financing, (2) research on customer preferences for
sustainable, innovative products, leading to recommendations for
designing utility marketing strategies and business models, and (3) an
analysis of regulatory frameworks that enhance innovation.
Thu, June 2nd, 6.30-9.30pm
"Greening Cities with the Ecological Footprint - a tool for advancing
cities' sustainability performance"
The Ecological Footprint helps society measure its impacts on the
environment. This tool finally makes sustainability measurable, by
calculating the actual land area needed to provide the various
resources that cities, countries, companies, and even individuals use.
By measuring the Earth's capacity to support life, and then calculating
human demand, the Ecological Footprint provides a tangible way to track
progress, set targets, and clarify policy for achieving sustainability.
Because the Footprint concept is easy to understand, it has been
instrumental in allowing community and business leaders to cooperate in
implementing ecologically conscious initiatives. Swiss-born and ETHZ
graduate, Dr. Mathis Wackernagel will present this tool and show how
the Ecological Footprint is being used to advance sustainability in
cities around the world. Dr. Wackernagel co-invented The Ecologial
Footprint 15 years ago and now heads The Global Footprint Network, a
unique network of Ecological
Footprin
t practitioners that work together to standardize and encourage use of
the tool.
Fri, June 3rd, 2.30-5.30pm
"Plugging into the Future: Public+Private Partneriship for Equitable
Sustainability"
Zurich luminaries will be showcasing leading-edge technologies and the
public-private partnership between the City of Zurich, the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) and Swiss Re, which is
responsible for a greener Zurich. This journey -- from today's best
practices in buildings, energy services and mobility -- to the
long-term vision of a "2000-Watt-Society" (2000 watt/per capita rate
for energy consumption) underscores urban sustainable development as
profitable and ecologically viable, and with partnership as the key to
success. Leaders from the public and private sector will present
cutting-edge green buildings and technologies that have improved
comfort for tenants and increased income for owners and developers,
and, last but not least, delivered sustainable benefits to society. The
workshop intends to serve as a toolbox for implementing sustainability
initiatives in other regions from economical, technological and social
perspectives.
