Conference by Marc-Olivier Wahler; followed by Networking and Standing

Switzerland currently enjoys an unmistakable presence in the world of
culture. The creations of Swiss architects are famous world wide, from
artists like Fischli & Weiss, Ugo Rondinone, Pipilotti Rist, Christian
Marclay, Olaf Breuning, Roman Signer, John Armleder, Christoph Büchel,
Thomas Hirschhorn, Sylvie Fleury, and Nic Hess, who are all stars in
the world of art – and the Swiss know-how when it comes to organizing
cultural events (Art Basel) is now highly respected. Why is Swiss art
(its artists and institutions) now placed in the realm of the
avant-garde? We are far beyond Orson Welles' assertion about
Switzerland and the production of cuckoo clocks... This conference
will attempt to show that an adequate comprehension of contemporary
Swiss art shines a unique light on today's art in general. More than
just an analysis of Swiss art, it's above all about an original
approach, shifted, of contemporary art in all its most recent
developments.
The Swiss Institute (www.swissinstitute.net) is an independent,
not-for-profit contemporary art center based in New York City. This
innovative art venue "with an international reputation" (Art Journal)
and "an inspiringly strange programming" (Artforum) provides a
significant forum for cultural dialogue between Switzerland, the United
States and the world. This unique angle fosters the interaction between
the Swiss and the many other communities and nationalities present in
New York City. The result is a distinctive view of art and a way of
thinking which asks audiences to look beyond traditional assumptions
about art and national stereotypes
Former founding director of CAN, a contemporary art center in
Neuchâtel, Switzerland (1995-2000) and director of Transfert , art in
public space, in Biel, Switzerland (1999-2000), Marc-Olivier Wahler has
been the Artistic Director of the Swiss Institute-Contemporary Art in
New York City since 2000. For the last 15 years, he has curated many
renowned international exhibitions and worked with more than 600
artists. As an art critic, he is a regular contributor to several
contemporary art publications.
