Have you thought about trying to raise your child to
be bilingual? What are some advantages of trying to
raise a bilingual child? What are some of the
difficulties we can expect to face? What are some
strategies to maximize success? When are the windows
of opportunity to introduce another language? And
what resources are available in our area to help us
raise multilingual children?
The idea of raising a bilingual child is both
appealing and possible for more and more families
these days, and growing up with more than one language
certainly has its advantages in today's global
village. Yet bilingualism really isn't something that
simply happens. Raising kids to be successful in more
than one language requires planning and learning about
bilingual language development. A family’s reasons
for choosing to raise kids with two or more languages
are as varied as the families themselves. Even the
word "bilingualism" has different meanings for
different families. For some families, having the
ability to listen in two languages but speak in just
one may constitute bilingualism, while other parents
expect their kids not only to be bilingual, but also
literate in both languages.
Whatever your goals for bilingualism may be, come hear
our speaker, Sylvia Ford, discuss these issues and
answer questions we may have about raising a bilingual
child.
Sylvia Ford is the Coordinator of Parents Place
Express in Palo Alto and has been the featured speaker
at several PAMP Mothers Club sessions, including Brain
Development: Implications for Limit Setting. She
earned her B.A. in Liberal Studies from SFSU, and has
a Masters Degree in Education with a specialty in
early childhood. After teaching preschool for almost
a decade, Sylvia has worked with Parents Place for
over 10 years, providing education and support
services for parents and teachers of young children.
In addition, Sylvia teaches Early Childhood Education
at Skyline College in San Bruno.
Representatives from local bilingual schools/
immersion programs will be available prior to the
start of the meeting, for members to socialize and
become familiar with various school representatives
and their programs. These representatives will
participate in the Q&A session following Sylvia Ford’s
talk.
