As a moderator you have the job to check every message sent to the mailing
list and decide if it conforms to the mailing list charter or not. If it does
not, you should in general contact the sender and discuss this with him. Note
though that you should under no circumstances censor or manipulate/edit the
contents of a message.
Here a partial list of what you should do:
Throw away spam message.
Throw away viruses.
Throw away offensive messages that have nothing to do with the list.
Don't approve majordomo commands sent to the wrong address. Instead,
inform the sender about the error.
In general you should not accept attachments.
Ask the sender to convert attachments to ascii text (in the
case of word documents or PDF files) or to include a URL to images the
sender wants to post). Images and Documents use up a large amount of space
in the archive. If the sender has no way of hosting an image somewhere
propose to have it hosted on the swiss-list web site for a limited amount
of time.
All job offers should be forwarded to pr@swiss-list.com and only be
posted if our PR person approves (Hansjürg is our current PR person).
Don't accept full resumes unless explicitly told so by the sender after
asking if he/she knows that the resume will end up in the archives and be
available for ever. If you accept a resume make sure its in ascii only.
Make sure that all 'for sale' emails are sent to the correct email list.
In particular no 'for sale' messages to the swiss-list if there is a local
email list. The only exception are 'for rent' messages, as they may
interest a larger circle.
Don't accept commercial 'for sale' messages
Editing messages: you can reformat messages that have been garbled, or
remove signatures of emails that have been cited. However, don't change
the text of the message.
If in doubt, send the message to the Committee list.
