Taxes yes. SS not necessary. I got refunded for the first two years as I
paid by mistake, but that may have changed. Then it was the first two years
as exchange scholar on J1 were free of SS. IRS has a great Web site with all
publications.

I agree. I had to pay. There may be some loopholes, though.
