My girlfriend is trying this route right now, and that's what we learned so
far: You don't need an employer to sponsor you. But you NEED a job offer
before you can apply for the visa. This is somewhat a catch 22. Need job
for visa, can only get job with visa......

Sorry to contradict, but this statement is not true. I am Swiss and I DID
have a home stay requirement. I was able to get a waiver. But it all
depends on your specific situation. Waiver might not be necessary to extend
the J1. Check with a lawyer if you want to be sure and get things lined up
in time. Or tell us more about your situation....
