I called the Swiss consulate in Montreal who takes care of all AVS
matters for North America. They told me that Swiss AVs and U.S. Social
Security are totally separate. Retirement pensions from each system
are calculated based on how much you paid into each one separately.

This mean that if you work in the U.S. for some years and do not pay
the voluntary AVS, your Swiss pension will be less than if you worked
all the time in Switzerland.
