Once you are in the USA with your B1 visa, you can extend it for another
6 months at the INS and it does not really matter if the extension goes
through or not, because the time it takes for them to approve or
disapprove is around 200 days and during that time you're allowed to
stay - at least that was the case up until about 3 years ago.
