I have come back to the US four times already since my last H-1B expired
last year (after almost 7 years in the US), for periods of time going
from 2 weeks to over 2 months, on the visa waiver program. As pointed
out, you need the new machine-readable passport. As long as you have a
reason to visit the US which does not include planning to work or attend
school there, you shouldn't have any particular problem.
