Madeleine,

Unless you are into computers the best is to buy a dual mode DVD player.
This means a player which can play NTSC(USA) and PAL (Europe without
France). Most Philips players can do that. I have one for about USD 85
something like Q35 which just works fine. Note your swiss player can
only be used if it can output a NTSC signal to your TV set or your TV
supports PAL video in.

Now you still have the region codes which most comercial DVDs use. So
you either dedicate a player per region or you just disable the region
check. Most players allow that and you can use internet sites like
http://www.dvdrhelp.com to get the particular instructions.
